It is quite obvious by now that love we Holland Lops as if they were our own children. Most people gravitate to them naturally because of their floppy ears, petite stature and (If you grew up in the 1990's) you get a bit of nostalgia reminiscent of Thumper from the Disney movie "Bambi". However, that alone does not always mean that makes one breed the best choice versus another, and when it comes to the pet market as a whole you never simply want to judge a book by its cover. So, lets take a deeper dive into Holland Lops origins and map out why they shine brighter than the rest.
The Holland Lop originated in the early 1950's and were a combination between two breeds that were over sized on one end and too small on other. Overtime they became a picture of perfection, and naturally the most popular pet breed throughout the United States. Ranging in size from 2-4 pounds, easy enough to comfortably hold for all ages, while large enough to live a long sustained life of 10-12 years, they fit the mold that other breeds could only hope to achieve. Perhaps most amazing however, is Holland and Mini Lops were created with the mindset that these wonderful animals would be loved by their human counterparts. In turn, their temperament and yearning for human interaction is second to none! Next, is the deal breaker of all else. The rabbits HEALTH (which is in all caps for that reason). As an owner you want to feel confident that your bunny will live a long happy life. Being overall easy to care for, with the proper cage set up and grooming, the bunnies will consistently hit the 10 year mark and beyond, which is what we found in our experience as well! Lops carry no hereditary diseases such as blindness, which is found in animals like Golden Retrievers and can be extremely hard to differentiate if the gene pattern affects the particular animal. It is always a sigh of relief to not have that issue in the back of your mind. With calm, loving personalities and their natural yearning for human companionship Lops check all the boxes when it comes to confidently taking the leap to make one your own. Thus making it fairly obvious why the pet owner world gravitates to them so much aside from their overall appearance. While it is without question that pets reduce stress, it seems that bunnies just have a knack for fitting the stress reduction mold better than most. While lower on maintenance, their intelligence level is extremely high so they form a natural bond quickly and in turn the owner feels a connection that goes far beyond other pets ranging in their size. It does help that they are the softest, most cuddly things in the world! And naturally petting an animal does reduce stress.
One of the key things I find is that bunnies are crepuscular- Whats that? Well this means they are most active and looking to play in the mornings and nights. Which means if you are working all day, fear not that your bunny is unattended because he/she is just waiting for you to come home to give him/her all the love that you were wishing to give him all day! Next, and this was me growing up. Saturday mornings I was up bright and early and my parents after a long work week just needed or WISHED they could get that extra bit of rest in the morning to help recharge their batteries. Looking back, knowing what they know now, they probably would have entertained getting me a bunny. Especially because living in an apartment, any other animals were out of the question. I have literally had customers reach back out to me saying "that purchasing a bunny was the best thing that ever happened to them" and if you do not believe me just check them out for yourself and you will see what I mean! At the end of the day though, I could give examples, citing professionals from an infinite amount of reputable sources, but then my blog post would never come to an end! What I can guarantee is that in the stressful time were in now, bunnies are without a doubt the pet you have been missing. They add brightness to my day and when I am feeling down and out, my immediate escape is my Rabbitry! Share that same experience with me and you will feel something that all bunny owners already know. That having one was the best thing that ever happened to them! Whether you're a parent looking to purchase a first time pet for your child, live in a apartment building that can't house cats or dogs, or just love bunnies like we do, the Tri-State area is the perfect place to have a bunny. With the proper care our bunnies warm up to there family members and can even act like little puppies.
They follow you around, jump up on the couch, go up and down the stairs, basically doing everything a dog would do except they don't require as much work, but do require as much love and attention. They like to be held/pet and are raised that way. ![]() Our bunnies are fed twice a day, morning & night. -Items you'll need/how to feed them: 1. 2 bowls 2.
